Yesterday, we asked SFI readers to call their senators in Washington and ask them to support a resolution authored by U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense and condemning Hamas’ rocket fire against Israeli civilians. If you’re following our Live Updates, you already know that the resolution passed yesterday afternoon by unanimous consent. 66 Senators – two-thirds of the chamber – cosponsored the resolution.
Thank you for calling your senators. Please call back and thank them for their support! And let’s be ready to make more phone calls when the House of Representatives considers a resolution which may happen soon.
Lost in the swift action by the Senate yesterday is the underlying message it sends to the world about where America stands when it comes to our alliance with Israel. Pro-Israel resolutions routinely pass the Senate with 90+ “yes” votes (out of 100 Senators) or by unanimous consent. In the House, these resolutions usually get more than 400 “yes” votes (out of 435 total). Those margins are usually reserved for uncontroversial things like naming post offices.
The reason our leaders vote in such overwhelming numbers to support Israel is because the American people are overwhelmingly pro-Israel and our elected officials reflect that attitude.
In the coming days, we will be called on to continue to defend Israel’s actions and her right to defend herself. As the violence continues and, possibly, escalates, Israel’s enemies will have better and more effective propaganda to use against us even though Israel takes more care to avoid civilian casualties than any army in the world.
It will fall to us to defend Israel to our friends and congregations – and, yes, to our elected officials.
